Starting in safe mode

Can someone help me with starting my pc in safe mode?
I've seen all the written descriptions and they all refer
to "shut down" and options by hitting F8. My system
doesn't say "shut down" it says "turn off computer".

Reboot your computer. After your memory is 'counted' and the BIOS info is
displayed hit the F8 key - you should get a menu asking you what mode to
boot into - Safe Mode is selected here.
