Starting an application changes my screen resolution!

I am running Windows XP Home. My system has developed a
intermittent problem. It boots up just fine. Then, when
I click on a desktop ICON, to start a application, my
screen resolution changes! After boot, I am at 1024 X
768. After clicking on the ICON, to start an
application, my screen changes to some VERY low
resolution. All desktop ICONS become very large. If the
application has a special startup screen, it is only
partly on the screen. I basicly lose control as I can't
select items. This happens on different application
startups. So it is not a specific program problem.
I have run VIRUS checker software, but it reports nothing.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
jim b

Right click the .exe for the application and select properties

Check the Compatability Tab and make sure it is not set to run in 640
X 480
