I use a 1tb external hard drive. Since loading sp3 Windows will not start. It
freezes up on the first Windows screen with the blue bars. I uninstalled sp3
and computer works fine now. Microsoft, please let me know when it's fixed.

Sounds like to be a CMOS / BIOS setting on your PC! Most PC BIOSes
tend be set up to boot from any external drive prior to the internal
one.

Maybe. But I've been using the external for over a year and no problem before
sp3. Possibly it loaded wrong. I might try again sometime.

If the bios setup is identical in both SP2 and SP3 installations regarding
boot order of hard drives, then the bios setup is not an issue. You have to
manually change this setting for it to change.

If your external drive has no active and primary partition, even if
instructed by the bios to seek this drive first, the bios should seek the
next sequential drive for a bootable partition when not finding a bootable
partition on the first.

What kind of external? Firewire? USB? SCSI? eSata? That info would be
helpful. Did you go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer
Management > Disk Management to see if it is there or if it is sharing
a drive letter with another device?

It is a WD 1 Terabyte Firewire assigned to the G: drive. If I hot plug the
drive after starting windows it is recognized. But won't restart with the
drive plugged in. This only occurs while running SP3. Worked fine when I
uninstalled XP3.

There have been a couple of KB article since SP3 was released since
SP3 was released that might address your Firewire issue.

1) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952825
2) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951410

The fix from 952825 sounds most close to your issue but the most
current 1394 related driver is from 951410.

If this is an Intel based computer with an Intel chipset, have you
already installed the Chipset Software Drivers from Intel? If this is
a PCI Firewire card, have you tried moving it to another PCI slot?

With the drive plugged in, did you go to Control Panel >
Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management and see
if it is trying to share a drive letter with another device?
