SP2 Broke Win Messenger Auto Sign-In

I just installed Windows XP SP2, and now have a problem
with Windows Messenger 4.7.3000: When I log-in to Windows
XP, Windows Messenger no longer automatically signs-in
using my Passport account. It automatically loads in the
tray, but then displays a red circle with white "X"
(meaning "not signed in"). If I right-click the icon and
click "Sign In", it signs-in without asking for
credentials, since I have already saved them with my user
account.

To trouble-shoot, I used Control Panel/User
Accounts/Advanced/Manage Passwords to delete the Passport
account associated with my user account. Then I did a
new sign-in to Windows Messenger with the e-mail
address/password box, and checked the box to "sign me in
automatically". This stored a fresh set of credentials
with my user account. But it didn't fixed the automatic
sign-in problem.

I also checked Windows Firewall, and verified
that "Windows Messenger" is enabled on the Exceptions
tab. (I realize that isn't required for the sign-in
process -- just when receiving instant messages from
other computers -- but wanted to make it clear that
Windows Firewall isn't interfering.) In fact, I
temporarily turned-off Windows Firewall and logged-
off/logged-on Windows Xp, but Messenger still didn't sign-
in automatically.

Has anybody else seen this since installing SP2? Is
there any way to correct the problem?

My messenger signs in, but no longer nofifies me of new Hotmail
messages. Going to the inbox in messenger takes me to Outlook Express,
not my Hotmail inbox like I was used to. This is why Hotmail was so
superior to Yahoo because of messenger notifying me of new messages.
Yahoo messenger is a piece of crap and installs a ton of crap and
shortcuts everywhere.

I saw that thread yesterday, but didn't want to change to
MSN Messenger. The last time I used it (5.0), it didn't
integrate with Outlook. I also didn't want
the "marketing" garbage it displays.

However, I just installed MSN Messenger 6.2, and it DOES
integrate with Outlook. It also signs-in automatically
without having to click <Sign In> on the icon. So I
guess I'll keep it. (I turned-off the MSN Today page at
sign-in, so the marketing garbage is bearable.)

I have the same problem. Any fix yet? I don't want to install MSN
Messenger as it has problem with MSN chat sessions - keep
disconnecting, this was 6 mths ago. I also tried adding "Hide
Messenger" registry key, it has no affect in sp2.

Probably need some registry tweak to fix it. Anyone ???

I suffered this problem and also an inability to awaken
from 'away' status.

I uninstalled Messenger 4.7.3000 using Start/Run...

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%
\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

And then reinstalled Messenger 4.7.2009 via Windows
Update.

Problems fixed apparently.
