I just installed Windows XP SP2, and now have a problem
with Windows Messenger 4.7.3000: When I log-in to Windows
XP, Windows Messenger no longer automatically signs-in
using my Passport account. It automatically loads in the
tray, but then displays a red circle with white "X"
(meaning "not signed in"). If I right-click the icon and
click "Sign In", it signs-in without asking for
credentials, since I have already saved them with my user
account.
To trouble-shoot, I used Control Panel/User
Accounts/Advanced/Manage Passwords to delete the Passport
account associated with my user account. Then I did a
new sign-in to Windows Messenger with the e-mail
address/password box, and checked the box to "sign me in
automatically". This stored a fresh set of credentials
with my user account. But it didn't fixed the automatic
sign-in problem.
I also checked Windows Firewall, and verified
that "Windows Messenger" is enabled on the Exceptions
tab. (I realize that isn't required for the sign-in
process -- just when receiving instant messages from
other computers -- but wanted to make it clear that
Windows Firewall isn't interfering.) In fact, I
temporarily turned-off Windows Firewall and logged-
off/logged-on Windows Xp, but Messenger still didn't sign-
in automatically.
Has anybody else seen this since installing SP2? Is
there any way to correct the problem?
