SP1 for XP HOME

I have a Gateway computer that came with XP Home installed. I recently had
to reformat my computer. I would like to install Defender, but to do so I
need to install SP2 and to install SP2, I must first install SP1 and to
install SP1, it appears that I first must create a bootable disks.

At least this is my interpretation of the various Microsoft download pages
I've read.

Am I in the right ballpark?

No, your interpretation of what you are reading is incorrect. SP2
includes SP1 so you don't need to install SP1 first separately and then
SP2. Nor do you need to create bootable disks.

Here is information about SP2; please make sure you've done the prep
work first.

No, you don't need to do any of that. Service Packs are cumulative,
that is newer service packs include fixes from older service packs.
Service Pack 2 includes SP1, Service Pack 3, when or if ever released,
will include SP1 & SP2... and so on. Simply download and install SP2
and don't bother with SP1. You don't need to create bootable disks to
install service packs, you simply launch the service pack installer from
the up and running Windows installation and the installation will
proceed. There are however certain measures or precautions that you
should take before installing a service pack. Installing a service pack
is a major change to the operating system and sometimes the installation
may fail or things might not go as expected.

You aren't anywhere near the city where the ballpark is located, actually.
heh

You need to get Service Pack 2 (it is cumulative... It contains all critical
updates released prior to it - including SP1/1a.)
You can install it directly and then you can get the 80+ post-sp2 updates.

Direct Download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD

After that - visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and scan for/install
the critical updates.

SP-2 is all that you need.

This is available as a CDROM from Microsoft. Or, you can download it, also
free. However, it is a very large download.

Once you install SP-2, run Windows Update, and you should be presented with
a large number of post-SP-2 patches.
