Sonic Activation update

EVERY time I log in Sonic tries to update and tells me it is looking for a
disk (which I have never had). The only way out is to use the Task Manager to
stop the operation. I don't know what Sonic is for. The update seems to be
controlled by the Installshield update manager in my control manager.
How can I stop this? It's driving me mad.

The Sonic program is for burning cd/dvd's. It probably came preinstalled
on your computer. If you don't use it, you can uninstall it from
Add/Remove Programs. While a basic program, it can still do more than
XP's built-in burning capabilities. You might want to reinstall it. It
would be available on the cd's that came with your computer or from
your computer mftr.'s tech support website for download.

If you don't want to bother with the above, go to the Control Panel and
you should see an icon for the Sonic Update Manager. Double-click on it
and then find the tab or button for update settings. Change the
settings to "Manual" instead of "Automatic".

Hi Malke - there is no Sonic update manager in the control panel - the
updating seems to be handled by the Installshield update manager which starts
the update procedure as soon as I click on it -- doesn't bring up a tab at
all.

Hmmm. Most of the systems I've seen lately have the Control Panel
applet. Just look again and make sure there isn't any Update Manager or
the like. It might not be named Sonic and might handle updates for
several programs. I don't have any systems in the shop or house with
Sonic so I can't check for you.

If there really isn't a Control Panel applet:

1. First look in the Sonic program itself for preferences/options. Most
good programs have a place where you can set your preferred updating.

2. If Sonic really doesn't have one, then it is time to use the System
Configuration Utility:

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab
and find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply
and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time
you do you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick
the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

If you aren't sure which item is the Sonic updater, you can Google the
names of what you see or look them up here:
