"some of the files could not be found"

Hi guys, thanks a lot for solving this problem on the net, because I was
having the same problem and didn't know hoe to solve it, and Windows is not
helping, previous versions allowed to attach a file that was still open, I
don't know why they changed it, but it's a msitake.

Has anyone write to Microsoft about this?, They should be informed.

Thanks again,

Eduardo

I was bediled by the same problem: when I inserted a file its name appeared
in the window but I was told that it couldn't be found. There it WAS! I
changed it from Word 2007 to Word 2004, but no, it still couldn't be found,
down in the thread comes the blessed solution. Yes, the doc I was trying to
attach was open, and so it was hidden from Windows Mail. Do better than that
Microsoft, but at least the problems is solved. I closed the doc and it went
off like that.
Many thanks to all of you for raising the problem and working out the answer.

Once again Microsoft needlessly complicates a process that worked well in the
past and the gives an obtuse error message that has no connection with the
real situation. Of course it works when you close the Office application, and
thanks to those of you who pointed that out. But why does it have to be that
way? Once it is saved to disk why can't the program just grab the saved file
and send it? And why does the mail program indicate that it is attached only
to report that it "cannot be found."

Microsoft really needs some competition.

<end of rant. I feel better now.>

Hi guys,

This is NOT a problem between Vista and Office. I have had the same problem
using the built-in mail program in Vista. The cause of the problem is
correct. If a file is open or appears to be open, the email program (whatever
it is) seems to attach but when you send you get the aforementioned error
message.

Microsoft needs to fix this!!! - Come on Microsoft team!!!!!

I believe you still have the microsoft application file open. Close the
document. I first saved a copy to the desk top, them created my e-mail and
attached the document. When I did that it went through. I too was having
the same problem and it was because I did not save and close the document. If
you save it to the desktop, you can then attach it to you e-mail. Let me
know if it work.

If you copy and past the file you want to include, you can do that while its
open by another program. Then, you can attach the copy to an email and send
it. Then, go delete the copy. Seems like a long way around getting
something done. It seems to me that an Email document is not intended to be
changed, so shouldn't need to be "owned" by windows mail before it is sent.
Just another backwards step for Vista.....

I was getting the same message for an excel file. I closed the open worksheet
in Excel - leaving Excel open - and that fixed the problem. It appears that

That is correct. Vista's security insists that a file be closed
before it can be attached to an outgoing email.

Maybe what all of us need is a support group for Vista users. What kind of
monster is it? By the way, does anyone know where you can buy Vista friendly
software? The stores are full of machines running only Vista, but only
software that is not compatible with it.

There are Vista support groups. Just look around in the same place
you found this Windows Mail forum. If you post there with a
description of what type of software you are looking for, I'm sure
you'll get lots of Vista-compatible solutions.

OK, I just want clip art and banner-maker type software compatible with
Vista...suggestions?

Try this link:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

That gets you in through the newsgroup interface. Not sure how that
translates to the web interface.

You could also call or email the vendors who make that software for XP,
and ask them if they have a Vista-compatible version available.

I just got a new laptop with Vista and have spent days and nights trying to
solve this. Microsoft just kept insisting I delete and then reinstall Live
Windows mail. In all my service numbers responses--no one mentioned this! I
am used to XP and Outlook Express where this is not a problem. You cannot
imagine how elated I am to solve this problem (and save my job!)

Marybeth, did you have a question?
Incidentally, there is no such thing as "Live Windows Mail".

My apologies for not using this forum to "ask a question" I was responding
to a reply that asked whether anyone recalled this was a problem also seen
with XP and outlook express. (it was not a problem with XP and OE) I was
trying to confirm it is a Vista issue that requires you to close a document
to release it so it can be sent as an attachment in email.
I mentioned Windows Live Mail (previously know as Live Windows desktop beta)
because the Microsoft support people insisted the problems I was having would
be resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Live mail. I am not sure
why you say Windows Live Mail does not exist. Vista comes with "Windows Mail"
The problem with this email program is you cannot download web based email
from sites such as Hotmail, etc. Windows Live Mail does allow you to import
all your email servers (in my case hotmail, gmail, Comcast, and a some work
servers) This was not possible in Vista's "Windows Mail'
I am not clear why you report Windows Live Mail does not exist other than I
must have irritated you by writing in, not with a question, but to express
great gratitude. Where Microsoft and Vista tech support was useless, this
community had the answer for which I had spent countless hours searching. My
apologies to all for wasting your time having to read effusive posts of
appreciation to the group at large. I am truly sorry if this community and
the posting rules forbade any but questions and advice. I thought I was
clarifying this is a new problem and related to Vista.
Finally, I don't know why you say there is no such thing as Windows Live
mail unless you have semantics concerns. Windows Live Mail used to be called
Windows Live Desktop beta. Info on this beta program can be found at
http://morethanmail.spaces.live.com/
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas?wa=wsignin1.0
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Live_Mail

When you write, "Iincidentally, there is no such thing as "Live Windows
Mail†I assume this means this forum does not support beta program
discussions. For, yes, indeed Windows Live Mail does exist. My humblest
apologies if beta program help is forbidden on these forums. Ignorance of the
rules is no excuse for disobeying them. I am also sorry to waste other
community members’ time by writing of my tremendous gratitude to discover the
way to achieve attachment of documents or XL in Vista. Other than arguing
Windows Live Mail does indeed exist, I will post no further on these
communities, if I can manage no to. My apologies.

Hello Marybeth,

I am sorry if I came across as "irritated", because I really was not.

My main concern, as it is with all posts I read here, is to attempt to
discern a question or problem statement that I can provide answers to.

In your case, I had difficulty understanding the purpose of the post,
and was merely seeking clarification. From your explanation, it appears
that I misinterpreted the purpose of that post. Of course, you are
welcome to submit comments and responses. But, since you are not a
regular responder here, you can understand the source of my confusion.

A far as the "Live Windows Mail" comment, that was not the main thrust
of my response, which is why it was prepended by "Incidentally".
Note that I was quoting your moniker for the product, when in hindsight
you probably misspoke and meant to say "Windows Live Mail".
What with all the name changes that Microsoft has been throwing around
recently, it is hard to keep up with which product name is what.

Cheers,
Gary VanderMolen
