Soft56K...CARP Modem causes shutdown

This is a brand new modem that uses the Conexant
(Rockwell) chip and is said to be compatable with WinXP.
I have even installed the updated driver from MS Windows
update. Every time that the modem is accessed, whether to
dial out or to receive calls, it causes the computer to
display the blue screen with the message "Driver irql not
less than or equal. Then it proceeds to dump the memory
and restart.

The behavior is consistant every time that I try to access
the modem. I have tried several drivers and nothing
works. Is there a know issue with this chip? I have seen
a few posts that match this issue, but none have been
responded to.

Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer.

I want to add that the diagnostics in Device Manager tell
me that the Modem is Okay...Strange
