modem drivers lost on reboot..

every time i restart my machine my modem driver stops responding. i
then have to uninstall the modem, reinstall the driver, then edit all
of my prefs. is there a reason for this? i've purchased and installed
a new modem and i have the same problem with it. both modems are decent
brands - us robotics, and creative. one is connected to the motherboard
and one is usb.

*i need to use a modem because i am dialing a gas meter station hours
from my home - not because i don't have broadband

By default my first choice would be to use the PCI modem card. Also check
for the latest drivers from the manufactures site.

Also check device manager and make sure your PCI modem is not sharing an IRQ
used by com1.
