Small Wallpaper Changer

B

Bernd

I am looking for a small wallpaper changer that does the following:
- Changes the wallpaper every login (or maybe once a day)
- Takes pictures from a defined directory
- Is small
- Is unintrusive
- Is free
- Does NOT stay in memory
- Does NOT change background color
- Does NOT stretch or tile the picture

Any suggestions?
Bernd

This could be what you're looking for, but I don't know 100% about the not
background change (I use Winwall myself, but that one stays in memory,
unless)

Name: Winwall
Vers: 2.1

Site: http://www.net-session.com/index.php?page=winwall
Down: http://www.net-session.com/winwall/winwall_setup.exe
Blic: Donationware
Plic: Donationware
Note: To autoshutdown, you have to manualy edit the ini file (see *)
Your other does and dont's can be adjusted in winwaal itself.
Info:
Winwall allows you to change your wallpaper at random or at given time
intervals. It comes with an easy-to-use interface giving you a huge range of
functionality and ensuring only the best quality of wallpaper management.
You can manually add images to your wallpaper list or let Winwall search
your hard drive for supported file types. It is also capable of loading
images directly from the internet giving you the opportunity to use live
feeds from webcams all around the world.
Winwall will cycle through your picture collection and display BMP, JPG, GIF
and PNG images in random or sequential order. It offers numerous switches
for tweaks and adjustments to provide the ultimate in convenience.
Managing and mastering your wallpapers will be a breeze using Winwall.

* <quoting from the helpfile>
Q:
I want Winwall to change my wallpaper only once per session. It should change
the wallpaper at start up and then close itself to save system memory.
A:
Open the patch.ini file which is located in the Winwall directory and turn
on 'Exit on Change'. (ExitOnChange=On) This will force Winwall to exit after
the the initial wallpaper change at start up, thus saving system memory.
Note:
Winwall will be inactive afterwards and needs to be restarted if you want to
use it again. (Remember to turn off 'Exit on change' again)

Or maybe

Bernd,

I have written a program that does exactly what you asked. It is all of
6KB big - I'm very proud of that! I don't have a place to post it, but I
have given copies to a number of people who asked about it in this
newsgroup.

The first time you run it, it prompts you for the directory with the
wallpaper (bitmap) files. From then on, each time you run it, it picks a
random picture from that directory and changes your wallpaper. It does
*not* stay in memory. It is 100% adware/malware/virus-free.

If you're interested, e-mail me and I'll send you a copy.

Regards,
Eric

Will it work with jpg files? I have a directory full of those.

Chuk,

Sorry, only bitmap files. I'm looking into being able to convert a JPG
file to a BMP, but I'm not sure. If I can get it to work, I'll let you
know.

Eric,

Thats a shame.

I prefer not to retain BMPs as they are so large by comparison.

Thanks anyway.

An alternative might be to have one that loads & changes the
wallpaper on startup, and you then just click on the tray item to
close it for the rest of the session. It will still change the
wllpaper next startup.

It's not the tiniest download, but you might want to try Phyle's
Wallpaper Switcher from my site. Works perfectly with jpg images.
It's at http://www.comcen.com.au/~scottford/_sgt/m2m2_1.htm .

Have a look at the Auto Wallpaper Changer here:

http://www.softlab.ntua.gr/~mario/projects.html

It does stay in memory, but there may be a way to disable this?
(you can right-click on it in the taskbar and exit it)

Chuk,

I'm not sure I explained it clearly. I change only the JPG file that's
going to be the wallpaper image into a bitmap. The bitmap file is
overwritten each time the program runs (if a JPG file is picked), so
you'll only be stuck with one bitmap file.

Wallpaper Manager works for me. Set it up once pointing to a directory
full of any sort of image files, add or delete images as you wish.

From the read.me file:

Eric,

Ah that would be good.

I hope you acheive it. I do presently use a fairly bloated wallpaper
changer, but I much prefer the idea of a small footprint freeware
product.

I will be interested to hear of your developments.
