Also, I'd like to correspond using the Agent newsgroup reader program.

Good. Whether you use Agent or some other newsreader, it's a much
better choice than using the awful web-based interface you've been
using.

Can
you tell me what the full name of this newsgroup is? It must be "alt."
something, but I can't seem to find it.

No, not all newsgroups names begin with alt. by a long shot.

This is the newsgroup microsoft.public.windowsxp.general. You can find
it on the news server msnews.microsoft.com. It's also propagated to
many other general-purpose news servers.

Use this as your news server host name:

nntp.aioe.org

AIOE is a free newsgroup server.

Why wait for propagation when you can connect directly to the MSNEWS server?

The computer is custom-builtby Overdrive PC and I bought it it is a
little over a year and a half old. It has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual
core processor overclocked from 2.0 to 2.6 gigahertz.

Hope that helps!

I want the OP to know there is more than one way to skin a cat.
The OP may be in my position someday, if not already.

I am subscribed to multiple NGs and read them daily. The majority are
not on the MSNEWS server, but all of them, including the four MS NGs I
read, are available on AIOE.

Are you aware that almost all newsreaders, including Agent, the one
you use, can easily deal with multiple news servers?

I also use Agent, and it is set to get newsgroups from five different
servers.

V4 ? I still read alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent daily, but for
my needs, I don't see any advantage in upgrading from v2. Four
instances work fine for me.

I'll have my 18th birthday the end of this month and learning new
upgrades isn't the fun it used to be. :)

Yes.

Your choice of course, but if my newsreader didn't support the number
of servers I wanted to use, that would be an excellent reason to
either upgrade to a newer version or choose another newsreader.
