Slow XP Shortcut Icons

Has anyone else seen this problem when starting up Windows
XP, some of the shortcuts on the desktop are just white
boxes ?.

Only after a couple of minutes do the pictures (icons)
appear in the boxes ?.

Any ideas of why and how to fic it ?.

Martin.

There's a lot going on at boot and the desktop display is one of the last things to happen. Make sure you don't have too many unnecessary items loading at startup--like Real Player & the like, auto updates, scans and spyware. Also, some desktop icons need to refresh from the Internet. Perhaps you have too many shortcuts on the desktop. Try a desktop cleanup to eliminate some seldom used icons.

Check for spyware/adware. Best guess is that you've got something running
that's slowing down the computer to the point where the graphics refresh is
taking a long time.
