Slow login outside diomain

When a user tries to login with domain account using cached credentials it
takes about 5 minutes for the login to complete after entering credentials.
When I diasable the network card it takes 5 seconds. Local accounts load
in 5 seconds also. I have cached credentials set to 20- It happens with
any domain account - I tested mine. Once it loads it operates OK

Any ideas??

It's looking for the domain because it has an active network connection.

If you try to logon to said system without any network (not necessarily
disabled - just not connected to any network) you should get the faster
logon. This is because it will sense _no network connection_ that *might*
be able to connect to the domain in question.

This seems to be the norm - so the next thing to check is the event log -
what - if any - messages are being put in the event log of the computers in
question when you notice this?

Check your DNS settings on said computer. Essentially - again - if they
have a network connection active when they logon and cannot contact your
domain controllers (as they will try if they sense a connection) then they
will have to 'time out' before continuing (and using the cached
credentials.)

Thanks- that looks like what is happening,. I say an event warning for
DNSAPI ID 11164
it came 6 minutes after the tcpip event indicating the network card was
active- nothing between the 2.- so
that would account for the 6 minute wait. Is there a way to force it to
tmeout after 30 seconds?
Do you think if I disable the network location awareness service it would
help?

Thanks

Carl
