shorten searching for DC timeout

I have XP SP2, When I login into the laptop in side the network, login takes
abotu 3 seconds. When I go home and log into the laptop, it takes 30-60
seconds. I looked at the event viewer and saw that it was searching for the
domain controller, and failed finding one, which after 45 seconds, then used
my cached credentials to allow me to log into the laptop with my domain
account.

I have read about the "Optimized Logon process" and I am concerned that if I
use this setting in the group policy, it will affect me when I am in the
local network, where I need the login script to run so that I can have mapped
drives (which are specified to be NOT persistent).

How can I shorten that timeout value so that if it can not find the DC
within 5 seconds, it would then use my cahced credentials?

You can't. It takes a while for the operating system to determine that there
is no domain controller as it will repeatedly try. The other alternative is
to create a local user account to logon to if that is possible. --- Steve
