Slow downloads in IE6 sp1

I have recently formatted my hard-drive and reinstalled Windows XP Home
edition, SP2 and most of the updates.

My problem is that when I connect to Microsoft to download updates
(currently trying to update Media Player) the download window loads normally
but the download speed starts at approx. 56k/sec then drops off to approx
128b/sec ( I have a 1MB connection), the result is that either the download
takes hours or it time-outs.

The version of IE I have installed is :-
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158
Cipher strength :- 128-bit

Does anyone know what the cause of this could be and have you any solutions?

ps. I am using an ADSL connection at home ( I tried using my computer at a
friends house who has got a cable connection and this problem did not occur)

I await your greatly appreciated replies

...this problem affects only Microsoft download (websites) or is it a general
problem?
Have u optimised TCP/IP (broadband) with Cablenut to ensure best
performance?

It is happening on most websites.

I am not sure how to optimise the settings

Ok, goto http://www.cablenut.com
and get the free cablenut adjuster - it is pretty self explaining!
Select your Internet connection type template and apply the suggested
adjustments to the registry - reboot and you are done! It might solve your
problem ;-)

I tried adjusting the settings and it made little or no difference to the
download speeds.
Anything else it could be?

Check with your ISP/Telecom maybe u have a bad line condition.
Since when is that problem? did it ever work flawlessly? what happened?
Give more details...
