I need to know if the version of IE that I have is the most current please. I
know how to click on Help, About IE, but I need to know if what is listed
there is the current version to be running as of todays date.
The version I have listed is :

Version: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158
Cipher Strength: 128-bit
Update Versions:; SP2;

Thanks in advance for any help/advice :)

Probably. Unfortunately the latest security patches have not been
added to that appMinorVersion property string. I think that 2180
proves only that you have XPsp2.

<title>KB164539 - How to determine which version of Internet Explorer is installed</title>

You could try using msinfo32 to see what else you have for IE
in particular. E.g. Run... (press Win-R and enter:)

msinfo32 /category IEFileVersions

click on the Version column header to sort that display by module
version. Then you should be able to find a group of modules which
are at a higher version level than the common 2180.

To find out which patches you have applied for all XP components
including IE you could execute the following in a command window:

systeminfo

Another tool to use is MBSA which at least can "check for missing
IE security updates" (according to its Help file.) and contains a link
to the Security Bulletin Search.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

Using that page you could find out the latest cumulative security patch
for IE

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS04-038.mspx

and in that document's FAQ you could find out that cumulative hotfixes
are available in a "rollup" called 873377.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=873377

There is more version information given in that article.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice :)

Thank you so much for replying. Here is what I have discovered.
First, I used the msinfo32 and this is what is listed:

The list is of course much longer. The one's that concerned me were the two
listed that say "file missing".
This one listed, is higher than 2180:

***browseui.dll 6.0.2900.2518 993 KB 9/29/2004 1:47:03
PM C:\WINDOWS\system32 Microsoft Corporation***

I also followed the link you supplied, the MBSA, but wasn't sure exactly
what to put in the search boxes. Here is what I put in the search boxes:

***Product/
Technology: IE6 for Win XP Service Pack2

Service Pack: All Windows XP Service Pack 2

more recent update. (This box I left un-checked, should I have checked it?)
Update Severity Rating:
Critical Important Moderate Low

Results may display bulletins with severity ratings different from the
selected update. Read why.
Bulletin release date: All***

Here's what if found for me:

Does that mean I need to get that update? I dont' understand how it could
have been missed when I have Live Update set to do updates automatically? How
can I get those dll files that are missing?
I don't know if I'm more confused now or not, lol!!
Sorry the post is so long, any help again is greatly appreciated :)

I think that's the most current, but there are a number of updates scheduled
to come out Tuesday.

I wish MS would stop listing those. I don't know anybody that has them.
I think it probably has something to do with the IEAK package.

This one listed, is higher than 2180:

***browseui.dll 6.0.2900.2518 993 KB 9/29/2004 1:47:03

Yes. When you sort by version you should see more than that. ;)

(Well done.)

***Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (834707): MS04-038

Windows XP Service Pack 2 ....
Does that mean I need to get that update?

No. It just means that that is the latest cumulative update for IE.
If you ran MBSA and you didn't have it you would be told that it
was missing. Other than that you have to do some manual
checking to see if you already have it. E.g. the systeminfo tool
I mentioned (to see if you supposedly have it) or the file manifest
in the security bulletin (to check if you really do have it.)
Hint: expand the Security Update Information header and the
product version header to see the correct file manifest.

I dont' understand how it could
have been missed when I have Live Update set to do updates automatically?

I agree with Frank that you probably have all the right files.
However, to answer your question, if you don't have all the right files
but it appears that you should then the most likely explanation
is that something interfered with the final copy steps of the update.
Usually that "something" is somebody's Anti-virus scanner
or other security program which can misinterpret legitimate
updates as attacks that need to be prevented.

How can I get those dll files that are missing?
I don't know if I'm more confused now or not, lol!!

Ignore those two "missing" .dlls but pay attention to the
versions of the ones that the article(s) list. That's how
you can prove that your IE is completely up to date.
