slow down of printing

Vance

I've got a W2K Pro wth SP4 machine wth a shared printer.
Printing was fine for the 1st 5 or 6 wks. Now when I
print, either from the local machine or from a network
computer, to this printer, it's taking 1-2 minutes for the
job to print. Any ideas?

What kind of printer is it? Is it using an LPT port or a TCP/IP port ?

First things first.
empty the recycle bin
Use IE tools internet options to help remove the temporary internet related
files and cookies.
Run any antivirus checker and spyware bockers you use (after any needed
updates)
Defrag the HD drive
Disconnect the network from the internet (if applicable) and turn off any
antivirus and antispyware.
See if printing (spooling) times decrease if so the anti virus program may
be processing the printer data files and slowing things down.
Change printing defaults to a lower quality setting
(Text or documents, not photos or high quality illustrations)
Enable bidirectional printing (Not to be confused with bidirectional data on
the printer interface)
Try using the "RAW" data mode option in the printer driver setup options (If
available)
At this point, It's necessary to see if the cause of the slowdown can be
determined. The cure is a different story. Any one or a combination of the
above plus some other issues can change printing speeds.

Hi Chuck,

You've saved my sanity !

I have an HP Photosmart 1100 directly connected (USB) to a Win2K box running
on a hardwired Ethernet network together with any number of laptops coming
in wirelessly. I have 2 Win XP boxes on the wired network as well

I was experiencing the same 'time lag' before printing started whenever I
sent over a print job from either the hardwired machines or any of the
laptops. Sometimes it would take as long as 2 minutes before the print job
started. This has been going on for weeks and I was about resigned to just
putting up with it.

With your suggestion to check the anti virus program on the Win 2K box that
the printer is connected to I have now identified the problem. If I stop the
anti virus program the print job starts virtually immediately.

I'll quit using the Win 2K box to do email and browsing (no big deal) and
quit using the anti virus program altogether on that machine.

Thanks again !

Richard
