Slow at times!

Hi,

This has got me scratching my head. I'm using XP SP3, IE8 and connected
using Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC to my Siemens Gigaset
SE587 WLAN dsl. My internet speed is advertised as 8Mbps.

When I do a speed test, either at speedtest.net or as I like
speedtest.bbmax.co.uk it will vary from time to time. For example I've just
run a test and got ping 57ms and d/load speed of 1801Mbps, no where near the
speed I should be getting. However earlier this morning I ran the same test
and got ping 57ms - 6890Mbps.

I have a laptop here running Vista and it is constantly getting 7500Mbps on
the same test at any time, however it's connected wirelessly to the router.

I've tried the following:

Changed the ethernet cable
Ran TCPoptimizer (it seem to work straight away but decreased again)
Updated the drivers (this seem to make it slower)
I also totally reinstalled XP for other reasons but it doesn't seem to have
fixed it.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

Thanks for your help and the link Jack. I understand that the speed tests can
be unreliable but why am I getting a constant speeds on my Vista laptop if
this is indeed the case!

I've done what the link said and tried to download a file from Microsoft.com
and all was good (827Kbs). I would like to try the dowload several times
throughout today as I have a feeling it is going to decrease again. I suppose
this isn't going to be a fair test as they may be more users on the Microsoft
site when I try for a second time.

However, I will post the result.

Many thanks,

Craig

As I suspected, one hour on and my download speed for the same file is at
132Kbs. Just don't get it, the vista laptop is just same all the time. Could
it be my network card?
