I'm looking for a freeware program to run slideshows with sound under
Win98SE.

Have been trying to do this with OpenOffice Impress from the Knoppix
and PCLinuxOS LiveCDs,following a "hot tip", only to realize, after
much wasted effort, that Impress can neither create slideshows with
sound, nor play such files created with Powerpoint.

The ideal program would let me insert Wave files to play while still
photos are displayed on screen, but in a pinch I could make do with
any program that would let me play such slideshows created with
Powerpoint.

The ImageForge paint program has a function to create an executable
slide show (or screensaver) with .wav background sound. Here are the
instructions from another post...

1- go to its "Tools" menu
2- choose "Create Album or Slide Show"
3- use the + button on the "Image Files" tab to add your pictures
4- go to the Viewer tab and assign a name (ending in .exe) for the
program
6- go to the Slideshow tab to choose effects and background sound if
wanted

If you want to run the slide show as a screen saver, checkmark the
Screen Saver option on the "Image Files" tab, and for the "Viewer"
tab, make the file name end in .scr (instead of .exe).

Thanks. I contacted Imageforge tech support and was informed that
their slideshow function only supports the inclusion of a single sound
file. So the only way to achieve my goal with it would be to create a
single wav file that includes all of the sounds I need, each at the
duration of the image I want it to accompany.

This is less than ideal, as I'd like to be able to easily change the
order of the images and accompanying sounds (the project is a teaching
program). Also, I don't have a clue how to assemble such a patchwork
sound file.

MyAlbum will do this. You can add a sound file to each individual picture.

Thanks. Will try it.

I'm not able to access the site right now for some reason, but will
try again later.

Thanks, I did go back later to the home site and managed to download
it. Haven't had a chance to install and try it yet though.

Just today I received an e-mail response to my inquiry to Irfan of
Irfanview, in which he informs me that it's possible to associate MP3
files with pictures in Irfanview's slideshow function, and
serendipitously, I've just learned in the thread on MP3 recording of
the freeware StepVoice, which allows one to record directly to MP3
format. So I think I'll try the Irfanview-StepVoice combo first.
