single click on taskbar icon opens multiple instances

Sometimes a single click on a taskbar icon will open dual instances of IE or
Word. Doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to be positive it's not
due to erroneous double clicking. The box runs WinXP Pro SP2. The only
thing that has changed recently is Windows Critical Updates being installed.
Any ideas what's going on/how to fix it?
