Shutdown and Startup problems

G

Guest

sComputer will not shutdown properly. I get the following message:

"NT Authority\System Shutdown.........DCOM Server Process Launcher Service
Terminated." Only way to shutdown is to power down. Now when Windows is
reloaded, most of the applications within windows will not function. This
includes System Restore. Browser and Outlook Express work OK.

Have run thorough Virus Scan with no viruses detected.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the last shutdown and boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

As I mentioned, I cannot shutdown the computer using Win and, it appears I
am not getting a proper boot either.

I appreciate your assistance.

I think your problem relates to your graphics card. What is your make
and model?

This option may not be possible.

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about your
computer:
Everest Home Edition (freeware)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Tip: To copy select Report, Quick Report, Plain Text, highlight required
text, right click and select copy. However, whilst this is fine for
posting small amounts of information into newsgroup messages
longer reports will irritate other newsgroup subscribers.

Have you switched from cable to satellite for TV? Is there a remote
control feature on the graphics card?

Hope this helps.

I have downloaded the EVEREST Home Edition and retrieved the report. It is
huge. Do you want it all or part and if part, what part.

Have been on satellite from the beginning. Yes, there is a remote feature
but I have never used it, as the feed is direct from the sat rec and the
channel changing occurs there. I have done benchmarking including the video
and saw no apparent problems.

The bit covering your graphics card i.e Windows Video under Display
without the Debug information.

It's best to look in the Event Viewer after you have updated the ATI
drivers.

Attempted the process suggested in the link you provided and the file
"6-1_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_29602.exe", which contains the drivers, will not
load. It fails to extract the setup.exe file, declaring it corrupt. Down
loaded the "6-1_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_29602.exe" file twice with the same
results. Also, for what it might be worth, I connot run the MSConfig file
which eliminates a number of trouble shooting tools.

I have decided to try a couple of things as follows:

1. Disconnedt all but the essential devices and see if there is a
difference in performance. If not..............

2. Load WinXP on the third HD and disconnect the RAID 0 arrary and see if
there is a difference in performance.

I will let you know about resutls.

Thanks for your assistance.
