DCOM Server Process Launcher Error

S

Stephen K. Brown

Please excuse double post. 1st post attached to another thread.

Had computer crash. Upon restart found that primary drive (formerly E:) is
now C: Drive has WinXP Pro with SP2 and all updates, one partition. Also
have 2nd drive, which was C: before crash, now D:, one partition. Was able
to finally get good XPPro SP2 and all updates installed on new D: Booting
from new C:, boot and loading of programs is
normal. All programs load. At very end of program load, however, error
window appears: "This system is shutting down. Please save all work in
progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was
initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. Time before shutdown counter with 60
seconds commences. Message states: "Windows must now restart because the
DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectantly". Computer
then restarts. Have done Norton virus scan, Microsoft AntiSpyware scan,
Ad-aware scan, Spybot Search & Destroy scan. All with latest (3/16/05)
definitions. All clean.

Could not find any answers via Google search or in KB. Is there a repair
for this? Thanks for all responses!

Does an error report appear on the system tab in Event Viewer. If yes
please post copy.

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Rebooted from C: several times. Made note of the exact time to the second
when the error window 1st appeared. Then looked in Event Viewer log. No
record of error or of boot for that matter. Since I can view Event Viewer
only when I boot from D:, am I only seeing the events occurring on that
drive? Is there a way to access the Event Viewer in C:? Thanks!

At the outset, computer had only one "good" XP Pro OS installed which was on
E: (now C:). Had "bad" XP Pro installed on C: (now D:) Reinstalled (after
much work) XP Pro SP2 with all updates on new D:

Please see thread DCOM Error thread this list. Posted twice because
original post
was attached to unrelated thread (the one you responded to) with same
subject name. Anyway, used
command SHUTDOWN -A to stop shutdown when booting to C: Mark L. Ferguson
in
DCOM Server Process Launcher Error thread (my 2nd post), this list,
suggested that I run Microsoft's
Malicious Software Removal Tool. Had previously run program on D: but not
on C:

After stopping shutdown with command above, attempted to download updates.
Would not download updates with following error: 0x800A01CE. Google search
found thread in tech-archive.net forum which suggested to run services.msc
and change Background Intelligent Transfer Service startup type to manual
and to set Automatic Updates service to automatic and to start process. Did
those items. Now can search for updates. Found one security update and
attempted to download and install, but installation fails. Found Malicious
Software Removal Tool link on web and ran it, all clean.

While booted to C: have tried to open several programs. Some open and some
do not. Apparently the original crash affected a number of my installed
programs. For your information am including error messages from Event
Viewer:

The nature of your problem is beyond my experience. I would surmise that
the system is confused by the change in drive letters so that there are
probably incorrect file paths in the Registry and elsewhere throughout
the system. Reformatting and reinstallation is I suspect the best way
forward.

Good luck.

Gerry,

Contrary to what I stated earlier, when viewing My Computer while booted to
the "old" primary drive, E:, My Computer shows the drive remains as E: with
the second drive remaining as C: When viewing My Computer while booted to
"old" C:, "old" C: now appears as D: and "old" E: appears as C: Weird!!

Anyway, thanks for your consideration of my problem(s). Did the error
messages mean anything to you?

Gerry,

boot.ini file from "old" E:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

boot.ini file from new D: ("old" C:)
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

/NoExecute=OptIn
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup"

Does the above help?
