Shut Off Norton AntiVirus 2005

Is there a way to totally disable Norton Antivirus 2005 besides going to the
task manager and "End Task" on each process? I only want to disable it when I
play games.

Thanks.

Hi

Stop the NAV service maybe.

To stop Norton 7.6 Corporate Edition AntiVirus, I run the
following command line:

net.exe stop "Norton AntiVirus Server"

If Norton Antivirus 2005 have the same service name I don't know.

I'm not familiar with NAV 2005 but earler versions have an icon in the tray at
the right end of the task bar. Right-click on that and select "Disable".
When you want to turn it back on, do the opposite.

That will disable the virus scanning, but the program is still running. I want
to exit the progam from memory.

Then perhaps you might set up different logons, having one that doesnt have
the AV running

Hi

Look into stopping the NAV service as I sugggested in my first post...

very easy to do this. bring up your norton antivirus program, go to
"options", the first system preference that opens should be "system..auto
protect". take the check mark out of the top to entries..."enable auto
protect (recommended)", and "start auto protect when windows starts up
(recommended)"... and click OK.
this will stop norton antivirus from running untill you double click your
icon and start it again....!!!! but keep in mind that this leaves you wide
open to virus attacks. taking these two check marks out of play stops
protecting your computer and believe me, this is a risky thing!!!!
there is one other way, but you need to be careful here. open your start
menu, click the "run" link. type in "msconfig", (without the quotations).
when the SYSTEM UTILTIES CONFIGURATION box pops up, go to the STARTUP tab,
look for Norton Anti-virus, and take the check mark out of it. if its not in
there, click on the SERVICES tab, and find NORTON ANTI VIRUS there, and take
the check mark out. (you can see, in the services tab area under "status",
that norton anti virus is either "running" or "stopped". and it would only be
stopped if you did the first thing i mentioned...taking the checkmarks out of
the norton antivirus options.) anyway, take the checkmark out, click apply,
ok, and then restart, (a restart or dont restart now box should come up.)
when your computer restarts, a system utilities box comes up telling you
there has been changes in the way your computer starts up. just put a check
mark in the little box and click ok, and your set.
SHOULD YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH OTHER PROGRAMS USING THIS SECOND METHOD, GO
BACK AND PUT THE CHECKMARK IN WHICHEVER ITEM YOU REMOVED IT FROM, IN SYSTEM
UTILITIES, AND FOLLOW THE SAME PROCEDURES AS WHEN YOU REMOVED IT.
the first way i mention is the easiest, safest, and most obvious way to stop
NAV from running.
hope this helps
