shut down winword.exe

Can someone shed some much needed light on a problem. If I
open an email attatchment, I am then unable to shut down
the computer (xp) without receiving a "winword.exe program
not responding" notice. If I do a search file
for "winword.exe" and then delete the file, the computer
will shut down appropriately. Is there an easy fix? Many
thanks.

Winword.exe is the main application for Microsoft Word. Deleting it will
simply make Word unusable.
You don't say what mail reader you are using. If it is Outlook, which uses
Microsoft Word for it's mailing client then i can only assume that Microsoft
Word is at fault. You could try reinstalliung Word to see if this cures the
problem. I was going to suggest uninstalling Word first but, as you have
deleted winword.exe, the uninstall program will probably not work.

John, Thanks for your reply. When I type in winword, into
the search, what comes back is 1. Winword 2. winword.exe,
which is typically only a 40 kb file which forms after I
try to open an email attatchment. A different winword.exe
file is formed each time, and after deleting it, the
program works fine and the computer shuts down without
a "not responding" warning. Otherwise, I get the warning.
The mail reader is Outlook. Does this make sense?
Thanks again.

I did a quick search of my C: drive and the only thing i get is Winword8
(11kb) and Winword (11,756) application. Remember i am using Microsoft
Office Enterprise edition 2003 - hence the winword8.
Either way the problem lies with Microsoft Word. I can only suggest you
reinstall Word and see what happens. I have had a quick look at the
Microsoft knowledge base but can't locate any problems relating to
attachments that refer specifically to winword not responding.
You could try looking in the knowledgebase to see if you can see anything
that resembles your problem. go to http://support.microsoft.com and choose
knowledgebase. You will need to select your version of Word. Also try under
Outlook.
