I use removable hard drives mounted in mobile
trays that have built-in cooling fans. Here're the specs:

They require a spare 5 1/2" bay for the mounting rack,
but they do work well, and the fan keeps the HD cooler
than body temperature. I use DiamondMax Plus 9
drives (7,200 rpm), and I've had no problems (that I
know of) using this system.
