sharing drives

I have 4 computers running xp pro. Wireless network working fine. Interent &
Intranet fine. I have printers shared and drives shared everyone can see each
other and look at each other. On one computer when I look under my computer
local disk and then sharing I get a different properties box than on the
other three.
On the one that looks different you can look at shares and permissions, on
the other three even though they are shared, the properties box just has the
usual share as and to set private folders. I need to be able to set the
other 3 so they can save to different computers as needed.

thank you for any help.

Lee,

On each XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS disabled on each computer, to have the Shares and
Permissions tabs available.

Chuck goodmorning and happy new year to you,
I'm writing from Italy
Getting mad trying setting Shares and permission on Xp Home.
Don't want to migrate a small office to 2000/2003 SERVER, just need a simple
authentication on the access to an Xp , do I need Xp pro is Home is enought?

Second question, does shares and permitions work on file moreover than on
folder?

Many thanks,
Edo

Edo,

How many computers do you have on your LAN, and how many might be accessing the
served (shared) files on any computer at any time? The connection limits apply
to each XP computer - 5 simultaneous connections for XP Home, 10 simultaneous
connections for XP Pro.

I'm not sure I understand your second question. You can set permissions by file
within folders, if you wish. You can restrict access to some files, while
allowing access to other files. And under Security - Advanced, you have
numerous settings to make very specialised settings.

I personally find it simpler to design the folder structure around permission
groups, and set permissions by folder structure, specially if you're maintaining
a workgroup (with multiple accounts on multiple computers). A domain may be
more work initially, but if you have more than 3 or 4 computers, it may be hella
less work in the long run. YMMV. Enjoy.

But keep asking questions. We all learn this way.
