several programs have appeared and vanish when my mouse goes near

I run Windows XP home edition.

Recently, several programs have appeared and vanish when my cursor goes near
them.

It appeared to start with Windows Update. The icon told me an update was
ready for installation and when I moved the mouse towards the window, the
window disappeared.

Next was Itunes, exactly the same thing, then task manager and notepad has
started doing it. Each program appears on the screen, but when I move my mouse
towards them, they disappear.

I have tried scanning for viruses and have used spybot, search and destroy
and everything else I can think of. I have looked on the support site but
can't find anything.

Anybody got any ideas?
