mouse or keyboard freezes when restarting

Another little problem that maybe someone can help me out with (please!) not as irritating as my earlier issue with drivers but still curled fist heading towards the keyboard type annoying. whenever I have to restart my comp be it to install new software, progs etc when it boots back up and goes to the account page the mouse cursor will not move, so I shut down....only the second time the mouse cursor moves only for me to find that now my keyboard is totally unresponsive so off the comp goes again and the third time everythings back to normal in my desktop world. If I'm asked to restart and I say no then shut down and re-start manually....it still does the same thing! If I dont have to restart and just shut down and boot up as normal everything remains fine. Is this an issue with my restart or is it to do with the installation of new info on windows?

Hi Again, I see you have a few issues (Besides the Video). Just a thought,
but did you install the Motherboard drivers from the supplied CD. I would
put the CD in, and attempt to install those, and read my answer to you on
your Video question in your other post. It sounds like your "Update" really
caused some issues. Did you format the Hard Drive, and then install XP
fresh?

Thanks once more Willie,
Yes the drivers came with the motherboard and have been installed and uninstalled and reinstalled all the latest drivers have been downloaded from the msi sight and installed. when I installed my upgrade I did format my disk so it was clean as my previous millenium installement had really gone belly up and no recovery disk to sort it out. My disk has been checked on a few times since I installed to check compatability saying my file type is fat32 however, when I go to my comp click on my disk and click format it shows as ntfs I was wondering if this was the problem do I have a conflict going on?

As I'm sure you have worked out by now Willie I really dont know anything and what I do know i have learnt over the last couple of weeks, there was a time when my comp was just a box under my desk.....then I decided to upgrade!! Anyway as I'm such a novice all your help wether it works or not has been much appreciated.

Well, you're doing fine...hang in there...the BEST thing you ever did was to
leave Windows "ME" in the dust, and move to XP...you will be much happier,
and, XP will be more stable once you get these unfortunate issues ironed
out. You would be better off with NTFS than Fat32 (You did say you now have
Fat32 on XP??) BTW, is your XP CD a Retail version(Green Box), or OEM (Just
the CD, Product Key, and Small pamphlet)?

It was a retail version came in a lovely big green box and yes you're right bar these niggles it is a much better system I can see that already even with the probs. I imagined I would be better of with ntfs as I have an 80gb disk and it suggested bigger disks where more suited to this system, the confusing thing for me is when it checks my disk for compatability saying my file system is fat32, when I check my hard disk it says it's ntfs? If I have to live with that I can like you said it's a much better system Windows Me was bloody awful!

NO, NO...You Don't have to live with that...NTFS is what you want. I would
suggest you save what ever things you have to CD, and IF you don't have that
many personal preferences set on this install, I would just start over...Not
a repair...START over...it sounds like you may not have that much "Stuff"
installed where you need to worry about losing the things you WILL lose if
you start over...you really have to weigh it out. A repair is an option, but
I'm not sure about the Fat32 issue...I personally would Start fresh...Is the
following is correct?...New MB, old processor, new HD, new Ram, New FULL
version of XP,
PCI Video Card...correct so far? You put it all together, boot up with the
XP CD in, choose install, Format using NTFS, follow the prompts...Then MB
Drivers from CD, then Video drivers from CD, turn on XP Firewall, download
Windows updates, install anti-virus, and update definitions...is this all
what you did, in this order? If not, you should

I have a new msi mb an athlon 2600xp which is also new, new hdd and my windows xp is new, with regards to xp it is not the full version but an upgrade as my windows me was so messed up my route to installing xp was a little long winded firstly I had to format my drive and then boot up an old windows 98 I had then when that was loaded I upgraded to xp. I think I may try and start a new like you suggested, format my disk again and load in xp but go for the install new option and not the upgrade.
