Services.exe process using >90% CPU

T

Tom

After startup on a windows 200o OS, I noticed my pc
performance was slow. Verified task manager and noticed
that my CPU usage was at 100%, with the services.exe
process using more than 90% of my CPU.

Ran a virus check and came up clean. Re-booting the PC
does not solve the problem and I cannot kill the process.

What can I do?

Try running SpyBot Search and Destroy on the computer also. If you run it in advanced
mode, there are tools that can show and allow you to selectively disable startup
programs. It also has a process viewer that can help you determine where the startup
folder is and hence possibly the application of the offending service. --- Steve

Oops. I meant the "offending process". Be sure to use it to scan for parasites also
first. -- Steve

Did you update your antivirus and reboot before scanning?

Try a second opinion scan by going to http://housecall.antivirus.com

You can also use this software to look for items that start up automatically
at startup:

http://securityadmin.info/faq.asp#startup

.... as well as looking through your list of services to try to find any new
ones. I might also search your hard drive for Services.exe and see if there
is a copy in an unusual folder.
