Service Properties - no Dependencies

T

Terry Pinnell

If I go to my Services, select any entry, and choose Properties, under
the Dependencies tab I now get 'No dependencies' (greyed). That's for
every service, no matter what type or status.

On the rare occasions (such as now) that I try to do some
'housekeeping', I find this facility very useful to tell me how
critical a service is. So I must get it back please!

This may be unrelated, but I suspect it might be a possible cause. The
last time this was working OK was probably some weeks ago, before I
installed SP2, then (finding myself with all sorts of problems),
uninstalled it again. So I'm back on SP1 now, and all seems reasonably
OK.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated please.

Hi Terry,

See if this command helps. Type in Start, Run:

Regsvr32 %WINDIR%\system32\wbem\fastprox.dll

Thanks Ramesh, but I'm afraid that didn't fix it. The registration
reported success, but neither then nor after a reboot could I get any
Dependencies ;-(

Terry,

Is the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service running? Make sure it's
set to Automatic. Also have a look at www.blackviper.com for the default
Services configuration given in a tabular column.

Thanks Ramesh. (Sorry if this is a duplicate - I thought I replied a
few hours ago, but don't see it here.)

Yes, that is running OK. I checked out Black Viper and made a few
alterations to get in step. But no change to problem.

However, I have just found some sort of clue, after several hours
googling.

When I try to Start> run msinfo32 I get this:

"Can't Collect Information
Access denied to Windows Management Instrumentation server on this
computer. Have an administrator change your access permissions."

Yet I *am* the administrator - sole user on a non-networked XP Home
PC!

Can you advise how I might proceed please?

Thanks, Ramesh. That starts:
"To resolve this issue, make sure that the following services start
correctly:
• Event Log
• Windows Management Instrumentation
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)"

But all 3 were running OK.

So I tried "For additional information about troubleshooting services,
click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base: 259733 How to Troubleshoot Service Startup
Permissions"

That turns out to be a long and (to me) dauntingly complex page,
overviewe as "To resolve these issues, you can configure the service
to use the built-in system account, change the password for the
specified user account to match the current password for that user, or
restore the user's right to log on as a service."

I'm the only user (Terry Pinnell, Computer administrator, Password
protected), so I assume the part that is relevant is that beginning:
"Member Server
If the user is a member of a stand-alone member server: 1. Start the
Local Security Settings MMC snap-in," which means nothing to me! How
do I start that on XP Home please?

BTW, although at the end that MS article says:
"APPLIES TO • Microsoft Windows 2000 Enterprise Edition"
I assume it also is relevant to XP Home?
