Post Service Pack 2 Issues

Hi,

I have some problems with XP after installing SP2. The problems are the
same as described in a Question raised in May:
==========================================
Subject: COM+ problems, possibly related to Windows Update 3/10/2006 9:45

Several computer on our network are showing the symptoms described on
KB909444 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909444) . The resolution
suggested on that article has no effect.

The symptoms are:

- Windows Installer fail with message " The Windows Installer Service
could not be accessed. You may be running in safe mode or Windows
Installer may not be correctly installed"
- The Network Connections folder is empty
- The Microsoft COM+ EventSystem service will not start.
- COM+ applications will not start.
- Clicking on the "Dependencies" tab on a service properties produces
the error "Win32: access is denied". The same error on the WMI Control
properties
- Windows Update fails with message "Please change your Internet
Explorer security settings To save changes to your settings for this
website, you need to enable userdata persistence for Internet Explorer"

We have run the usual anti-virus/anti-spyware without results.

I suspect that this may be related to Windows Update (maybe the Windows
Installer 3.1 update? ).

Today I installed Windows XP Professional SP2 on one of our laptops,
followed by Office 2003 Standard. No problems up to this point, but the
above symptoms appeared after I ran Windows Update. I also installed
MSN Messenger 7.5 at this point.

Any ideas? Help!!!

I have tried all the suggestion listed in Article 825826 (how to trouble
shoot missing network connections icons in XP), have removed and readded the
workstation from the domain and also uninstalled patch KB911927.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sorry the fix in KB909444 didn't work for you but once I changed the
windows\registration folder premissions as described in the article my issue
with windows installer service, dependencies and empty network folder were
resolved.
Glad I found your post.

Hi Barb,

Many thanks for your reply - unfortunately this fix did not work. Did you
have to make any other changes? I have given Everyone full rights to the
Windows\Registration folder - but the problems persist.

Regards - Manish
