Service Pack 1 Requirements?

About a month ago, I installed the SP1a. I noticed that when it was finished, my free disk space dropped dramatically (around 3gb).

Only now did I find out that it wasn't supposed to take up 3GB, but only around 600-700MB.

Anyone know what the problem was? WHY DID IT TAKE UP 3GB?!!!
