Disk space not recovered after uninstall

Hi, I've looked around on the newsgroups and haven't found an answer.
Basically I was running low on my primary hard disk (I have 2, both 20GB) so
I uninstalled three games. This should have freed up around 5GB but I got
none of the space back. I've done the clean up and one button checkup with
norton and the defrag. I've run chkdsk, which fixed a few errors but this
only freed up 200Mb. Since then I removed the pagefile from the primary hard
disk and put it onto the 2nd one. This freed up around 2GB. But im still
around 3GB short?

I've tried those things, I don't have the system recovery on as I use Norton
GoBack. If I compress the C: drive will that compress everything on the
drive? If it did do that would it slow the computer down? Do you think the
loss of disk space might be because the drive is faulty?
