Hi Dave.

Thanks for looking at this.

Microsoft website says there is a patch available through Support. The
service is "Service Control Manager" Error 7023. Microsoft says there is a
charge for support for this issue even though this is a glitch in WinXP Home
Edition.

I am a bit of a newbie so please be patient.

Thanks

I don't know where you read or heard that but it is incorrect. Hotfixes are
always free. They don't have separate phone numbers. You make the call then
tell them you need the fix for article ID such-and-such and the charges are
waived.

When Microsoft scanned my ID they said I had to contact HP for free support
because the software was on my HP when I bought it. They said "Free Support
is NOT available" for this problem. Maybe I don't get it?

Anyway, I contacted HP support chat and, after about a half hour, they gave
me a link to the patch. When I ran the patch it said "You don't need this
patch". I am guessing HP gave me the wrong patch.

My computer has been locking up and I get two main errors - the one I have
told you about and another one -

We're sorry
There is no additional information about this issue in the Error and Event
Log Messages or Knowledge Base databases at this time. You can use the links
in the Support area to determine whether any additional information might be
available elsewhere.

What a mess?

What article ID are you referring to?

Check Event Viewer for errors. When you view the logged events in Event
Viewer (double-click them in the right-hand pane) in the upper right corner,
third button down is a copy to clipboard, then you can paste in the body of
a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different System Log events (that are a Type:
'Error' or 'Warning') since last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

Also check Device Manager for error codes and or non-starting devices.

Hi Dave.

I did a workaround. I set all "Services" on "Manual", rebooted, looked for
all Services that "Started" and changed those to "Automatic". I did have to
change a couple more to "Automatic" for my printer/scanner to work but that's
it.

So far, NO ERRORS in Event Viewer and NO locking up.

This probably doesn't solve the actual problem but it works for now.

Correct, not a good solution!
