Server service will not start

My PC running Windows XP Home edition decided to stop sharing folders on my
home network. After digging into it a bit I found that the server service is
stopped and it will not start. When I do try to start it, I get the
following error message: "Could not start the Server service on local
computer. Error 2001: The specified driver is invalid". I tried to google
all sorts of variants on my problem to no avail. Does anybody have any
suggestions on how to get my PC to start sharing folders again?

Thanks.

I have similar questions posted on Windows Security etc.:-
I have 3 or 4 PCs on a home network. 2 are XP SP2. I have attempted to set
File sharing and permissions on the "main" one - but have got very lost. Like
a typical wally user, I've forgotten what I did. Now, when I start it, the PC
does bad things - I believe this is due to services not running, e.g.:-
RPC
Network Connections
COM...???

I think the services may not be running because I have accidentally changed
login pernissions/settings. I have an account (Ted) which is in
Administrators and has the above problems. I have changed the password on the
Admninistrator account and that has even worse problems - the taskbar/Start
button do not even appear!

One of the awkward symptoms is that when I rightclick items in Services or
Users and then clk Properties - nothing happens, no error, just nothing.
Grateful for any expert tech advice.

Take a look in your event logs and in device manager to see if anything
looks amiss.

I don't see anything amiss in the device manager, but there were several
entries in the event log basically stating that the server service could not
be opened. There were also entries related to the redirector service that
seem to coincide with the server service errors. What is the redirector
service? Here are the error log entries verbatim:

The first one says:

"Unable to open the Redirector service. Redirector performance data will not
be returned. Error code returned is in data DWORD 0."

And then immediately after there is another entry:

"Unable to open the Server service. Server performance data will not be
returned. Error code returned is in data DWORD 0."

These two errors always showed up together, and this happened several times.
Probably every time I tried to manually start the service or tried to share
folders.

Any advice?

After digging a bit, it appears that the "Redirector" service has something
to do with the "Workstation" service. When I open up the Services window
from the "Administration Tools" selection in the control panel, I do not see
a service called "Redirector", but I do see the "Workstation" service listed.
It is stopped, and it will not start. It seems that the "Server" service
needs the "Workstation" service to be running for it to work. Maybe the root
cause of the problem has something to do with the "Workstation" service.

Hello,

I had a very similar problem and fixed it with some help from another user.
Go to "start" "run" and type "sfc / scannow" into the run box. You should
have your Windows disk handy as you will be prompted for it. What this does
is to replace any corrupt Windows files on your system. I found I had to hit
the "retry" button that kept popping up as the computer tried to read my
Windows XP disk. But with patience, it loaded all of the files it needed.
The whole process took about 1/2 hour... After the process is finished (and
there will be no indication other than the blue line indicating progress will
end and disappear), reboot your machine and check your services by typing in
the run box "services.msc" Hopefully the services that were stopped will now
be started.

Good luck,

RMaizell
