server not configured for transactions

K

Kirk

I have two W2K machines connected across a simple network
with a dlink wireless router. I have enabled sharing on
both boxes. Box 1 can see Box 2 and share files just fine.
However, in order to see Box 1 from Box 2, I need to
search. When I attempt to log in to Box 1, I get the
following message:

"server not configured for transactions"

Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers (W2K/XP's). Got File- and printersharing loaded? Is
Netbios over TCP/IP enabled (Advanced properties of TCP/IP, tab WINS)?
Is the server-service running? Do you see the administrative shares (IPC$,
ADMIN$) when you run 'net share' from the commandline?

Hi Marina,

I have the same problem as Kirk. My answers to all of
your questions are 'yes', except the last two. The
administrative shares show up on an XP laptop, but not for
the W2K machine. Could you please help me understand how
to turn them on?

Thanks so much for your help here!

Make sure that the server-service is running. If you can manually set the
'net share IPC$', but it doesn't come up automatically after a reboot, you
could try to remove the Client for Microsoft Networks and File- and
printersharing, reboot and add them again.

I have a very similar problem.
Win2000 running on two machines and ME on a 3rd.
After upgrade to SP4 on both W2000 systems, one machince
works fine and see the home LAN, maps to drives etc.
The other machine can ping first machine but can not
search for it and if I try and Find Computers near me it
says "The Server is not configured for transactions".
I followed the thread and the workgroups are the same,
Netbios is running over TCP/IP, File and Print sharing is
loaded
The following is the response from "net share"

The computer (TERRY) than can not use "Computers near me":

print$ c:\WINNT\SYSTEM332\SPOOL\DRIVERS
PRINTER DRIVERS
C$ C:\
DEFAuLT SHARE
ADMIN$ C:\WINNT
Remote Admin
IPC$
Remote IPC
CD on TERRY f:\
DVD Burner E:\

The one that works and the home network:

C: on Zach C:\
HPLaserJ LPT1 Spooled HP laserjet

Please help,

Thanks,

Terry
