Server Application Error When Trying To Edit Graphs

Sounds like you're putting quotation marks someplace where they
don't belong in the Run command. Please quote the exact command
you're typing, and maybe we can get this sorted out. The
problems you're citing are classic symptoms of the Norton
Antivirus Office Plugin, and disabling the plugin usually solves
the problem.

Thanks, Ernie. Nothing in there is ringing any bells for me. I suppose
having worked on the file on a Mac could have contributed to the issue, but
it really shouldn't be causing the kind of problem you're seeing. It is
interesting though, that you *were* getting a "can't read" error, but now
you're getting a "server not found" error. Hmmm.

I'm still leaning toward Norton AV. Garfield-n-odie is right that what you
describe are classic symptoms of the Office plug-in getting in the way, so
his suggestion to post the exact text you're typing in Start|Run might be a
good start. Since you found that office plug-in DLL on your system, you
shouldn't be receiving a "module can't be found" error.

You know, I wonder what another WinXP/PPT 2003 SP2 system would do with
those charts? Steve, is that what you're testing on? The "server not found"
error messages are usually machine-specific, but it would be good to be sure
in this case.

You know what, Ernie? You might try round-tripping the presentation. That
often weeds out oddities and weird problems in files. See
http://www.powerpointworkbench.com/html/round_trip.htm for instructions. Oh,
and I'd do this on a system that opens all the graphs! (Maybe the Win
2000/PPT 2000 machine.) Don't know this will resolve it, but it won't hurt
to try.

Echo S,

The operating system is Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.

I updated PowerPoint 2003 several days ago and installed the latest service
pack. Prior to installing the service pack, when I tried to open this file,
I got a can't read error.

All the graphs in the presentation were created using MS Graph. I have only
one file named graph.exe on my hard drive. I even have slides with multiple
charts on them and I can open some and not others.

I have edited the presentation on a Macintosh computer running MacOS 10.3.9
with PowerPoint 2004 for Mac. Do you think that could contribute to the
problem? I have had no problem with the file on a computer with Windows 95
running PowerPoint 97 and a computer with Windows 2000 running PowerPoint
2000.

Echo S said:
Wow, I don't know.

What's really odd is it happens on some but not on all.

You said all the graphs were created with PPT's graphing tools, right?

It's PPT 2003 with both service packs installed, right? Which version of
Windows.

Also, if you do a search on your harddrive for Graph?.EXE, do you find more
than one version of Graph?

Because there are spaces in the pathname, you need to include the
quotation marks:

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton
AntiVirus\officeav.dll"

In your post, the closing quote mark looks like some sort of
extended ascii or unicode character that the Run command might
not recognize as a closing quote mark. If you're copying and
pasting the command into the Run box, then manually delete the
quotation marks and retype them.
