Serious Error Message

I recently installed the software for an old scanner that
a friend gave me. Since then every time I start Windows
the New Hardware Wizard opens, prompting me to find the
correct driver. The scanner's manufacturer tells me I
need to purchase a CD in order to get that driver.

Today at startup I received the following message: "The
system has recovered from a serious error."

This was the "technical information contained in the
error report:"
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini112203-02.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER5.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml

Does this mean my computer will be in trouble if I don't
purchase that new driver?

Thank you, Tom. When I go to the UMAX site, it shows
VistaScan 3.5.5 as being available for my scanner with
Windows XP. But I don't see anything that tells me that
this is actually a driver. Do you have any suggestions as
to how I can confirm that I'm actually getting the
software that XP wants before I buy it?

Also: Should I unplug and not use my scanner until I get the latest software
for it?

Honestly, the people at Umax know their hardware much better than I. Please
contact their technical support.

Yes, that's what I would do. Windows XP is the most stable Windows yet, but
there's no reason to taunt it. <g>
