Secure Site Log On Problem

I

Ira Blumenthal

A family member has IE6 running on a Dell Inspiron 5150 with Win XP SP2. IE6
is able to sign on to insecure sites like www.microsoft.com with no problem.
However, it cannot connect to a secure site. If I type in www.gmail.com what
appears in the address bar is http:///? www.gmail.com and The page cannot
be displayed is displayed. If I type in http://www.gmail.com the same thing
appears in the address bar but The page cannot be displayed appears again
with a different message.

I have checked the connection and Internet options including the security
settings settings with my desktop computer that has no problem logging on to
secure sites and there is no difference except my desktop has an IP address
assigned and the laptop has an IP address assigned automatically. No proxy
server is involved and the box is not checked in Network Settings.

I don't know what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi,
There are a number of possibilities.

First (because it's so easy to do) shutdown everything for about 5 minutes-
computers, router, modem, etc.

Next: Delete the Temporary Internet Files. IE> Tools> Internet Options>
General>
Delete files (and delete offline content when that dialog pops up) It's
often recommended that the TIF folder be kept at about 50 MB (Settings.)

Then: Open a Cmd window (or from Start> Run) enter
ipconfig /flushdns
Then restart.

Then:
HOW TO Troubleshoot Situations Where You Cannot Complete MSN Sign-up or
Connect to Secured Web Sites

Then:
How to troubleshoot problems accessing secure Web pages with IE 6 [XP] SP2:

Hope this helps,

Don,

Thanks for your assistance. I visited the web pages you suggested and
printed them out. I went through all the information and eventually traced
the problem to a malfunctioning Norton Internet Security 2004. Although
their firewall and anti-virus programs were both present, I believe the
problem was with the anti-virus. It seemed to be corrupted and I couldn't
get it to operate properly no matter what I did. Since the subscription
service was almost up I finally removed all of Norton Internet Security.
This eliminated the problem. I used the Windows XP SP2 firewall and loaded a
different anti-virus program. All is now well.

Thanks again.
