Second Attempt - IE6 never shows Work Offline under File option

L

lindseyv

I am using Windows XP Home - SP2
IE Version 6 - SP2
Both with all Updates.

Under IE 5 and 5.5 This option was always clearly available under the
Menu Item FILE. However it is no longer the case with 6.

I have read the Help Pages about saving a page for offline Viewing and
the Synchronise routine. However, apart from this seeming an
incredibly complicated way of doing things (as opposed to previous
versions which just made pages in cache available when offline and of
course Firefox too), it doesn't seem to work.

Maybe I am missing something. I have checked with a friend who has
the *Work Offline* File item available, but I do not and cannot seem
to get it to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The function of IE's File....Work Offline function, is in a .dll called
browselc.dll. If that option is not showing up in your IE's File menu, I
wonder if that .dll file has been damaged or has been replaced by an
intentionally edited version. See http://www.rtfm-ed.co.uk/?p=89 You could
try and get a copy of that file with the same version and replace it to see
if that solves the issue.

If you are running Windows XP you could try the system file checker -
Start....Run... type in:
sfc /scannow - click Okay.

Hello Jon,

Thank you for replying and your suggestions.

I quickly checked the file existed, which it does. Then I ran the sfc
program as suggested. There was no report or result, it just closed
so I guess that means it found nothing untoward.

I again trawled my way through the extraordinarily complicated method
for *setting up* viewing files offline and I still cannot get the
menu item to show.

I don't know if you have any further ideas. If not, I thank you for
you thoughts so far.

Regards,
Lindsey

This might provide a work around:
Internet Explorer 5 Power Tweaks Web Accessories:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/previous/webaccess/pwrtwks.mspx
Offline/Online button
Set sites as trusted or restricted under tools
Copy URL in Right click contextmenu

Of course, await an OK from Jon Kennedy.

Thank you for that mae,

Interesting, because that is exactly what I would love to be able to
do. Of course it is referring to IE5 *only* and I had that before
upgrading to XP whereupon it promptly ceased to be a feature of IE6.

I cannot really understand why IE6 has taken such a step backwards in
terms of user friendliness and ease of use. But such is progress I
guess.

Thank you again for the help, I will wait to see what Jon thinks and
if it is even possible to make use of that download.

Hello Robert,

Wonderful !!!!!!! That fixed it. I visited this page at technet
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q257693

There, it clearly explained why it was happening. Because I use a
local file on my computer as my homepage ( a series of html links
that serve as shortcuts to other web sites) this was causing the
problem, though it never occurred to me it would be.

One work around is required each time of Opening IE. However, the
better solution was via the Registry and a new folder in Windows
Explorer as well as a new entry in the *Homepage* settings under
Tools. Now I have *Work Offline* available to me.

The Registry is not for everyone, I know, but it was not difficult to
do and yes I did back it up first.

So Thank you so very much Robert. A niggling problem finally got
solved.
And once again it proves the value of these Newsgroups.
