Config:
Windows 98, IE 5.5 or 6, SBC Yahoo DSL, 192 MB RAM, 10 GB
HD, Compaw Presario
After installing SBC Yahoo DSL, all images in my browser
come up with a red X. Javascript pop ups also do not
work. This happens using IE 5.5, 6, Yahoo browser and the
AOL browser. I tried using the IE repair option, however
it did not fix anything. In an attempt to use a
guaranteed fix, I reformatted the hard drive reinstalling
Windows 98, SBC Yahoo DSL and while only using IE 4,
everything is fine. However, upon upgrading to IE 6, the
problem returned. I downgraded the browser back to IE 4
and then downloaded and installed IE 5.5 SP2 and the
issue went away for a short time. I tried using the Yahoo
Browser tonight and the problem returned. I called the
technical support line, however I could hardly understand
the tech and he claimed this was an OEM problem. I know
there are several people all having this problem and some
of them are also using SBC Yahoo software.
A possibly unrelated problem is that I frequently receive
the dialog box asking me if I want to work offline or try
again. I get this box pretty randomly while trying to
surf web sites.
I haven't tried MyIE2 yet only because it works fine on 4
and 5 if the Yahoo browser is never launched however my
roommate launched it and the problem came back. Besides
that, its just not really an acceptable "fix". Its not a
TIF problem because reformatting would have taken care of
it. Nor do I think its a problem with the HOSTS file but
I'm going to try that next (I'm not at home with the
problem beast right now). My other fix to try after
renaming the HOSTS file is to try Netscrape but I hate
that program. Am I missing anything? I'm not
technically challenged obviously but this problem is
wearing on my last nerve. I'm ready to reformat, cancel
SBC DSL and go back to dial-up. Yes, that's how
frustrated I am. Help!
thanks!
