search page instead of 404 Error page

Hello,
I'm probably the only person in the world who would want to do this, but is
there any way to make the good old "Page Can not be displayed" error page
come up in IE instead of redirecting to sea.search.msn.com/....? I've tried
opening the search pane, clicking Change Preferences, Change Internet Search
Preferences, and selecting With Classic Internet Search. This made the
"page" go away, but the URL in the address bar still changed to
sea.search.msn.com/..., which is the part I really want to stop from
happening.

XP Tablet Edition SP2, IE 6.0.2900

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Open IE, click tools, click internet options, click on the advanced tab,
scroll down to the search section, and click do not search from the address
bar. I think that might be what you're looking for.

You certainly are not. I just posted a similar inquiry, having not
seen yours first.

bar. I think that might be what you're looking for.

Perhaps that will get rid of sea.search.msn.com, but it did not solve
my problem, namely: avoiding auto.search.msn.com. (Actually, those
are aliases for the same IP addresses.)

Any other thoughts?

Hi Mike and Galen,

There is an undocumented setting in the registry (well not publicly known,
for obvious reasons)

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
Do404Search

Change its value to 0

or maybe even deleting the value (untested, but IE should use a default
value for deleted registry values)

or you choose the "Reset Web Settings" button on the Programs tab of
Internet Options. Although this will reset other settings for your browser
(homepage, search provider)

Regards.

Galen,
That seems to have done the trick. Thanks a ton.

Rob,
I'll keep your suggestions handy as well, in case it ever becomes necessary.

Thanks to all.

Odd that it works for you, but not for me. On the other hand, I must
that that is exactly how I thought I solved the problem in the past.

Sigh, I might have to resort to that myself. I am relunctant to mess
with the Registry.
