404 Error hijack

M Murphy

Hi,

Usually when I type in a web page that doesnt exist, I
get the standard Microsoft "404 Error - Page Not Found"
page. But recently, when I get a 404 error, instead of
the Microsoft page, I get a different page (URL unknown)
which has a search box and a stupid red cross
saying "page not found". It is not malicious, it just
REALLY REALLY bugs me. The search takes me to
www.lop.com, but as far as I can tell, there are no
references to this in the registry.

I dont remember doing anything in particular on the day
when it appeared, but I am connected to a small home
network, and the problem exists on all the computers. I
have already tried sifting through the registry in the
Internet Explorer sections, but really don't know what to
look for.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated,

Michael.

Changed Subject: to make it easy for people to find answers.

The nassty parasite LOP.COM!
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ and look for Lop. (Notice how many
parasites there are.)

Get SpyBot available from
http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/ and update the reference files
through their Online update function. Run them and select all items and
remove.
You may have to reboot and rerun a couple of times to completely remove
them.
Also run the Immunize function to
prevent these nasties from installing again.

Get SpywareBlaster to stop these nasties.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Update the reference file through the online update function.

Removal Tool, your choice, novice users, Lavasoft's Ad-aware,
http://ftp.pcworld.com/pub/new/privacy___security/aaw6181.exe

Lavasoft/Ad-aware home: http://www.lavasoftusa.com

Advanced users, SpyBot Search & Destroy,
http://studserver.uni-dortmund.de/~su1669/spybotsd12.exe

SpyBot home: http://security.kolla.de/

Install either but both are not necessary, reboot, read FAQ and overview, use
