Search feature does not work in XP

Search Assistant does not load from Start/Search or from file explorer when I
right click on a directory and choose Search. I tryed to reinstall the Search
Assistant , by right clicking on srchasst.inf in Windows\inf directory and
choosing install. This didn't solve the problem. Also registered dlls with
command regsvr32 jscript.dll regsvr32 vbscript.dll . I found this is KB
article 831430 . Can anyone help me on this? I have basically run out of
options for possible solutions.

See 'Why doesn't Search work?'

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and
select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the i386 folder. (This fix will require
you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View
tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\inf
to open directly to the inf folder.

In addition to the other DLL's you mentioned, re-register these two, as well.

regsvr32 wshom.ocx

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Another user reported that installing and removing Kapersky antivirus caused his Search to stop working............

You can also download and install TweakUI for Windows XP. In the Explorer section, check the option to use Classic Search in Explorer. Does this work, and allow Search to open without the Search Companion?

I tryed registering wshom.ocx , urlmon.dll and changing to classic search via
TweakUI but still unable to load search. I can't pinpoint when this started
to
happen. I try to keep the system clean with firewall , antivirus and spyware
removal software , so Iam unable to find explanation. I installed SP2 but
this
didn't correct the problem. Thanks for your help and suggestions . Jim--

Jim,

For lack of a better option, at this point, try the following:

REGSVR32 /I /S SHELL32.DLL

Log off/log on and see if Search works.
