scroll bar problems

S

Scott Drysdale

in addition to the double scroll problem, i'm seeing
something else which is much worse.

win2k, ie6, fully updated.

1) when dragging the scroll knob, sometimes the mouse
pointer will change to the "no/do not" symbol and the
window no longer scrolls. when i release the mouse
button, the scroll jumps to the end of the page.

2) when scrolling with any technique (kbd, mouse, etc),
sometimes the portion you scroll to displays only briefly,
then the display jumps to the end of the page.

these problems are really serious, as they make it
impossible to view portions of some pages. i'm noticing
this mostly in vbulletin-based forums.

i have no viruses according to housecall, and no evilware
according to ad-aware. roomate had a friend here for a
week who installed a bunch of yahoo mail/chat/messenger
crap, but i've since removed that junk.

i started noticing weirdness about 2/3 weeks ago, which
probably corresponds to when i installed the last security
update.

For some reason each time I click my mouse on the sidebar
to page down it moves down two pages at a time instead of
one like it use to. Can anyone tell me how to rectify
this?

OK Ron, hope you like the name 'Neil' (only kidding).
I've done a little digging and apparently this
scrolling 'feature' is caused
by some faulty coding in the latest IE6 security update.
If you can live
without the update for a while until MS fix the problem
just go to
Start>>Control Panel>>Add/Remove Programs and scroll down
to highlight IE6
update Q824145 and click on Remove. After a reboot your
scrolling should
return to normal - mine has, phew.
