Scanner problem

Hi, not sure if this is the right group, but here goes anyway.

I have a couple of machines running xp Pro SP2, They are not super fast
machines, but they are fine in most respects.

I have an old Primax Scanner which, with Win 2000 drivers works well on one
of them, and although the scanner only is visible in the hardware manager
and add remove, it works fine.

However, the other machine seems not to want to see this scanner, well, it
ill see it as new hardware and install the drivers as per the other machine,
but they never show up in the drivers tab in hardware properties, and
although the scanner works, a restart loses it and the found new hardware
wizard keeps popping up .

So, has something in the registry screwed up, or what. Its a pretty standard
flatbed scanner with a USB connection, and although dire warning are given
when installing the 2000 drivers on both machines, the fact that it is fine
on one would seem to me to suggest they work or should work!

Anything I can do to perhaps make the system update the drivers part of the
registry so it will work?

I wonder if the USB drivers you are using are what is causing the issue
between the two machines.

Well, one would have thought that if the drivers worked on one XP machine,
they would work on another. As I say, they do actually work on both, but the
second machine is not retaining the information, so when you look in the
properties, you see nothing there, and of course, on a power down, they are
not usable next time you boot.

My feeling was something odd in the registry, but exactly what it might
be... I'm loathe to do a complete reinstall of Windows just for this, I'll
buy a cheap scanner that might work, but first I'll try installing it I
think.

Sulk.

In device manager, hit View, Show Hidden. You may have a "broken
installation" hanging around messing things up. In that case "remove"
ALL instances (also any "unknown" ones), ant then do a clean install
from scratch. (exactly according to manufacturers instructions from step 1)
