Have you tried installing the drivers in XP Compatibility Mode?
I have an older Visioneer One Touch 5800 here, and I was able to install the
drivers successfully in compatibility mode.

Now, if I could only get the Paperport software to install :(

If it is just a matter of the installer not wanting to install as it doesn't
recognise Vista you could download the Orca database editor to try to edit
the installer file. It's part of the Platform SDK:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...35-C656-4969-ACE8-E4C0C0716ADB&displaylang=en

But here is a direct download for just Orca:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl.../win98mexp/en-us/3790.0/msisdk-common.3.0.cab

Copy the installer for your scanner software onto the desktop, and open it
within Orca. Find LaunchCondition and edit VersionNT to include 600. Save
the file and then try it again.

It's worked perfectly for me for other software.

I have the same scanner and use Paperport ver.9 software. Do not intend to
abandon this scanner and software because vista would not recognize it. Also
vista advisor recommends I uninstall and then reinstall Power Quest Image 7.
From previous experiences with MS OS Winxp Home when a program remains in
the computer and installation goes well the programs work, once you
uninstall the program and try to reinstall is when the program does not work
or will not install. Not worth giving up hardware and software because of
drivers not functioning.

This is the error message I get, whether installing in user mode or as an
administrator.

<quote>
Dialog Title Bar = "16 Bit Windows Subsystem"
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS: 0000 IP: F0 8B 01 70 00 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application
</quote>

This is an older version of PaperPort, 7.0.
The odd thing is that it installed OK in Vista RC1.

Do you think your edit will work on this?

No, that edit will only work on installers that just say that you haven't
got the right version of Windows, and says that it will only work on
NT/2000/XP/2003.

Assuming you are not trying to install that on Vista64, it looks like the
virtual DOS machine for running 16-bit apps have been changed since RC1, and
made less compatible. I'm surprised it worked before, as NTVDM is not
supposed to be able to access hardware directly.

You should really look out for a newer version of that program if you can.
If it worked before in RC1, you could try replacing NTVDM.exe with the older
version, under Safe Mode, but it may cause instability.

I am running Vista RC1(5600) Software installs ok but cannot find driver.
You *should* be able to install the drivers successfully in compatibility
mode. I was able to do so with my One Touch 5800 drivers in both RC1 and in
the RTM.

If you still have the old XP PC, re-attach the scanner to that and see what
drivers were being used. This is most likely to work if the drivers were
built-in to XP. Identify the driver files and the related 'inf' and copy
them all to a floppy disk. In Vista, indicate that you have a driver disk
for the scanner, put in your floppy disk and see what happens. I did this
for my Umax Astra 2400S scanner and it works perfectly in Vista with the
drivers and 'inf' from XP. XP had built-in drivers for this scanner but not
Vista.
