RPC failed while 2 PCs connected

Yes, I'm sure. This login is member of group administrators. Remote
Security Service is running (start option: automatically). Firewill is
set to inactive, but the service itself is running. LSP/Winsock tools
didn't help ... there is still that error 1726.

cheers, marco

Marco,

Well, I don't claim to know everything about Windows Networking. I don't think
anybody who really knows Windows Networking will make that claim, either. So
it's possible that you have some yet undiscovered problem, that causes your
symptoms.

But, it's been my experience when helping here that there are many ways of
having a firewall, or other security component, that you're not aware of.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html

Now, you have 2 symptoms which might be related>
# The "net view \\Laptop" command returns error message "1726 - The remote
procedure call failed".
# Browstat returns "Could not open key in registry, error = 5".

The latter problem is known here to be seen when there's a problem with a
firewall, or with LSP / Winsock corruption. The former problem could well be
caused by the same. A RPC requires administrative access to the other computer,
which you can have only under XP Pro with Simple File Sharing DISABLED. So
let's work on the "error = 5" first.

When you ran LSPFix (and did you run each one in turn?), did any procedure make
any changes? All "didn't fix anything" aside, were any changes made?

Try running the Network Setup Wizard, see if it recognises the USB connection
for networking. DragoII (the laptop??) is your Internet Gateway, right? Why
are you using a laptop as an Internet gateway?

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#ICSHost
Select the first option:
This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer.

Then Drago becomes the ICS client.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#NATClient
Select the second option:
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or
through a residential gateway.

Consider getting Ethernet, and forgetting about USB.

I'll give you the advice, and coaching, but it's your computer. So you have to
do the work, and read all of the above (and follow the links) with an open mind.
And ask questions if anything doesn't make sense. Unless of course you can pay
for my plane ticket and expenses. ;)

Hi Chuck!

Thanks for all that support! I will look at this points the next days.
The reason to use a laptop as Internet Gateway is following:

The laptop is my main computer I use for everything. I use the desktop
only sometimes. But then I need Internet connection on it, too. And
filesharing should be possible - or (preferred) remote control of
desktop PC with VNC or something else. I don't like to run the PC all
the time when I only need Internet and LAN access on laptop.
Furthermore, indeed the desktop has two ethernet cards I can use for
connection, but the laptop has only one (used for LAN/Internet). So it
was my idea to use one of the many USB ports to connect both computers
together.

Marco,

OK, I suspected that you were using the laptop as the ICS host for practical
reasons. It's just in reverse to my sense of order. But it should work equally
as well, as long as you're prepared to have it powered up and online whenever
you wish to use the Internet from either computer.

I personally do not recommend ICS. I think a properly setup dialup router is a
much better solution.

Hi Chuck!

Sometimes things happen, I cannot believe! After reading your pages, I
understand what you mean with activating an account (I thought to set
an local account active to login local ;-)). So I did this, but it
didn't help at the first run.

So I decided to test this with an ethernet connection and simple file
sharing. It worked immediately!!! Ok, switched back to USB, and test
again with SFS ... and suddenly it runs with USB, too! Next step:
Advanced SF .... and it was still working!!! ICS works also fine.

Sometimes it's impossible to understand windows and computers ;-).

Thank you a lot for your help and patience!

Cheers,
Marco

Marco,

That's great news! Congrats on sticking thru it all!!
