I am uncertain that the following article
will help you but it may be worth a look:

(815240) Windows Explorer Stops Responding
When You Try to Rotate a JPEG Image in
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Here again, I am uncertain that this patch
will solve your problem but you might want
to have a look:

I have the same problem. If anyone finds out *where* they can download this
patch from, could they post it here.

thanks,
Rob

There's a link for the patch in my previous message
but I'm not certain it will solve the problem that was
previously described. If you try it...let us know what
your problem was and if it was solved.

Here's the link again:

Thanks John.

I took a look at that weblink and the patch. The patch is quite old - I
don't think its the specific one the KB article is referring to.

What puzzles me is why MS can't just make the patch available to download
from their site if they have it (with suitable caveats etc). This seems to
be a problem that a lot of people are suffering from.

Yes, that's the one I need. but my WinXP is an OEM version and MS won't
provide support unless I pay extra for it and the place I bought my PC won't
because its a "software issue".

Hence why it would just be easier all round if the patch was downloadable
rather than 'requestable'.

nightmare , scanned loads of old pictures using a Hp1200
photo scanner (6"x4" photos)(weeks) , so there come out

Well, at least we know it won't work...I was
unable to try (verify) the solution because I
don't have the problem.

I think the best/easiest solution at this point
(before WinXP SP2 is released) would be
to use a digital image editing program to
rotate the images.

You can rotate them in IrfanView if you do
not have an image editing program. It will
even batch rotate.

IrfanView 3.85

(get the plug-ins too)

While it doesn't fix your problem with XP, there are lots of applications
that will losslessly rotate your photos (I'm assuming you saved them in .jpg
format from the other posts. Exifer, Irfanview, ThumbsPlus all will do it,
and the first two are free. For lossless rotation, be sure to read the help
file, you can't just open and rotate, or it won't be lossless, except in
Exifer.

This might be easier than trying to find the fix. I battled with a
well-known networking lockup glitch with WinME for a long time; there was a
file that may fix it, but you had to go through the support system to get it
(even though it's existed on every single copy of ME I've installed, after
all updates). I finally just gave up and used the workaround which means
you don't ever use the places listed in your Network Places, you have to
burrow down from the top. I never could figure out why they didn't just
make the file available...even though I am eligible for support, I've never
used it and have no desire to sit on the phone and burrow through the system
and then explain that I've already tried all that and it doesn't work and I
need the file. (I even did a web search to see if some kindly soul had
gotten the updated file and decided to share it, but all I found was other
people with the same problem that wondered why they were being so stingy
with it)

Anyway, there are alternative ways to rotate...I'm surprised your scanner
software doesn't give you that option before saving.

The bug doesn't effect me if I right click on an image in thumbnail view and
then click rotate. it is only when viewing the imagei nt he view that the
problems seem to occur.

Photo images are in .jpg format , tried with Irnanview
same happens again , locks up with scanned images ,
digital camera ones rotates with ease, pics of the web no
problem , tried like you sugggested Gary in the
Thumbnails View with right click - rotate clockwise etc..
waits about 3 mins then error message pops up "You cannot
rotate this image. The file might be in use or open in
another prgram,or the file or folder might be read only"
So made the folder not Read only , but still locks
up..might get a real scanner instead, only got this photo
one for its size etc..

That's odd it's doing it in other applications, but it makes me wonder if
the scanner software saves in an oddball jpg format. Photoshop has a couple
of options called 'optimized' and 'progressive' that cause problems, but I
just tried both of those and they still rotate in explorer with the right
click.

Maybe you could open the photo in another application, save it (using 'save
as') and see if that changes it. If you originally used fairly high quality
jpg, and use a high quality when you resave, it shouldn't do much damage to
the photo.

If they do rotate after you do that, maybe (next time) you can scan the
photos into your photo editor using the 'import' or 'scan' function, and
save them from there instead of using whatever HP gave you (I assume it
saves them automatically?).

I had this happen with tiff files in ThumbsPlus a couple of years ago, it
wouldn't let me save them unless I changed the name with 'save as'. It said
they were locked or in use, but they weren't. Then I'd go back later and it
would let me. It went away by itself, probably with a software upgrade, so
I can't be much help in that respect, I still don't know why it was doing
that.
