Revolution (so far) has MASSIVELY disappointing specs: ATI, IBM didn't seem to do much for Nintendo

That's the point. The Playstation had a more diverse lineup because it
offered a much better business model for developers. Cartridges made N64
development too expensive and way too risky. You could do a relatively
small first run for a game on the Playstation, then if the game was a hit,
quickly resupply the retailers with new copies. You couldn't do that with
the N64. You either made a bunch of expensive (and prepaid!) cartridges
and prayed that they would sell, or you made a smaller amount and then
couldn't take advantage of the situation if the game did well. The more
expensive cartridges also made it impossible for Nintendo to truly compete
with Sony's "Greatest Hits" series.

Note that Nintendo fixed both of these problems with DS cartridges. They
were designed to be much cheaper and can be manufactured quickly.

I couldn't care less if N64 was considered a success or not by Nintendo, I'm
not a shareholder. I can tell you, however, that it gave me more FUN, as a
gamer...than PS1, PS2, Gamecube and Xbox ever gave me. And I'm in deep love
with my PS2 and Gamecube, so you can only imagine how much value I place on
N64. Waverace, Mario, 1080 Snowboarding.....all the games I love on Gamecube
were 10 times better games on the N64. How much of that was to do with
cartridges, I don't know or care.

Not quite. I'm starting to see stuff for X360 that looks true next gen,
the PC will catch it fast...but not yet.

And what exactly are you starting to see that looks "true next gen"? Please
share as I have yet to.

I wouldn't really argue with that, some of my favorite games ever were on
the N64. I was just responding to somebody's assertion that Nintendo's use
of cartridges was not the primary reason that Sony was able to take over the
market.

PC gaming technology has been advancing way too fast for the
consoles to keep up this time around. Obviously consoles still have a huge
advantage in providing a single, stable platform, but that isn't as big of a
deal as it used to be. PC developers have been getting a lot better at
making games easily scaleable from low end to higher end depending on what
hardware is being used. The fact that there are realistically only two GPU
manufacturers, both of which use essentially the same graphics API, also
makes it a lot easier for developers to optimize their games for the PC.

Yeah, but it IS quite an advantage to know *exactly* what's there, and
tune the graphics accordingly. What you have on the PC is a rather
haphazard array of options involving resolution, AA, AF, and other
settings, making it impossible to really optimize the look of the game
from the art on up. The PC may still win, due to brute force...

Perhaps its because they are now seeing higher res stuff at 720p. Maybe I'll
drop my in game resolution a bit and see what the fuss is ;)

Sega was also able to take over the market, and in a very short period
of time too. This would indicate to me that Nintendo hardly had a firm
grip on the market to begin with. Certainly, myself and all of my
friends preferred the Genesis over the NES and (especially) the SNES.

Sega's failed attempt to 'revolutionize' gaming was not unlike the
marketing schemes of most of the companies right now. It cost them
dearly. Old school gamers of the time period did not take kindly to
their industry-changing exploits. Fortunately for Microsoft, Bill Gates
has a lot more money to waste than Sega did. There's nothing like
following somebody else's failed business model. I still don't have an
x-box, and I've yet to see a game that made me want one.

Well, OddWorld: Stranger's Wrath did, and Chronicles of Riddick was tempting
me, but that is not enough for me to justify buying another console.

Certainly did round my way. Even the girls got in to playing Ecco The
Dolphin (Still one of my faves as it happens). Remember that
Wolfenstein port? That was one of the reasons why SNES owners at my
school were ridiculed (Even by Jaguar owners).

Not that the SNES was a bad system, I can still remember the amount of
weeks during the summer holidays spent with all my pals round mine
playing Mario Kart.

Cheers,
Rob

oh no, theres no doubt the snes is the more powerful of the two
machines, but the megadrive still seemed to have a far greater
presence in europe (or the uk at least) than the snes did.

i seem to recall reading that the only place that the snes was the top
machine was in the USA and that in japan the two were pretty much neck
and neck.

So, globally the SNES was the more popular machine? Personally, I hated the
Megadrive - Sonic was GREAT as was Sonic 2 and 3. Streets of Rage was
wicked too....otherwise, what a pile of stinming shit.

The SNES on the otherhand was a flawless masterpiece of a console.

Obviously everything above is how I feel personally, im sure many people
LOVED the megadrive.....twats.
